After completing his passionate Symphony No. 5, Beethoven (1770–1827) turned his attention to this incidental music, *Egmont*. Hartl, who was the director of the Vienna Court Theater in 1809, planned to stage Goethe’s play accompanied by music, and this work was the subject chosen. The story celebrates the self-sacrifice and heroic deeds of Count Egmont Lamoral (a Flemish military leader and politician, one of the leaders during the early stages of the Eighty Years’ War). It celebrates his self-sacrifice and heroic deeds. Through this work, Beethoven’s own political convictions are also portrayed. Although today only the overture is typically performed, it is a masterpiece in which the passion reminiscent of the Fifth Symphony can be felt throughout, and it deserves to be held in even higher regard.
