[Beethoven: Austere Yet Vibrant—Volume 3 of Julian Laferrière’s Complete Symphonies] Cellist and conductor Victor Julien-Laferrière, born in 1990, and the Orchestre Consuelo—a flexible ensemble he founded in 2021, composed of young virtuosos selected to best suit each piece— With the support of the La Châtes-du-Dou Festival—founded in 1966 by Georges Szifra—they present the third installment of a four-year project to record Beethoven’s complete symphonies live. This release features Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” which revolutionized the history of the symphony, and Symphony No. 7, which Wagner is said to have described as “the embodiment of dance.” While the orchestra’s core consists of modern instruments, it adopts an eclectic approach in the style of Harnoncourt. Once again, the orchestra uses valveless natural trumpets and horns, which, together with the genuine-leather-covered timpani, produce a sound that is both unadorned and dynamic. Furthermore, the string section keeps vibrato to a minimum, creating a sharp and precise texture. The tempos are set relatively fast; Symphony No. 7 is vibrant and brimming with energy, while Symphony No. 3 avoids becoming overly emotional in the Funeral March and highlights each rhythmic element in the finale with clockwork precision, resulting in a performance full of vitality. Recorded live at the Abbey Church of Saint-Robert, renowned for its excellent acoustics, this performance allows listeners to enjoy a solemn and intellectual portrayal of Beethoven—a fusion of the tight ensemble unique to a small chamber-music-style lineup and the rich reverberation of the historic church.
