[Masterperformer Antonini Makes a Guest Appearance on the Recorder! Three Early Bach Works Centered on the Theme of “Longing for Death”] From among Bach’s nearly 200 surviving church cantatas, this album features three works composed before his time at the Weimar court, all of which include the recorder in their instrumental ensemble. Based on the theme that —“death as a parting from the sinful world and a joyful journey into God’s realm”—and are considered the very core of the Lutheran Protestant faith to which Bach remained devoted throughout his life. Additionally, the album includes one piece on the same theme from the *Schemelli Songbook*, published in 1736 while Bach was active in Leipzig. The performance features an ensemble of accomplished musicians based in the historic Polish city of Wrocław—a hub now attracting outstanding early music performers from across Europe—along with an elite boys’ choir affiliated with the city’s International Music Forum. Furthermore, the recording features Giovanni Antonini—director of *Il Giardino Armonico* and a master recorder player—along with his duo partner Shenfan Qiu, and violinist Stefano Barnesi—who has also made a remarkable contribution to Antonini’s complete Haydn symphony recording series—join as guest artists, delivering a rich and fulfilling performance that takes the Polish ensemble’s prowess to new heights. In addition to the crystal-clear recorder duets in the very early work BWV 106 and the Weimar-era BWV 161—both beloved by many listeners in Japan—this delightful program also features fresh and vibrant solo performances in BWV 182 and BWV 478. The instrumental ensemble consists of nearly one player per part on strings and a positive organ, while the vocal ensemble comprises 13 members—six boys and seven adult male voices—with the soloists also singing in the chorus. The aria in Movement 5 of No. 106, sung by a boy soprano, is truly an “angelic voice”—quite different in character from a performance by an adult singer—and the result is a masterful performance in which the presence of each performer truly stands out.
