Description:
The violin (viola da gamba) was a beloved string instrument in France during the Baroque period, and the teacher of Marin Marais is Mr. Sainte-Colombes, who is known to have added a seventh string to the instrument, which initially had six strings. Although there are still many unknowns about this master, including his first name and the year of his birth, research has revealed that his son is also a virtuoso viol player and that some of his works as a composer are still extant. In recent years, recordings of his works have been made. The only known manuscript of the music of Sainte-Colombe II was written by an English viol player, and although the entire manuscript is in two-tiered notation with bass continuo, the pages containing his works have only the viol parts with no accompaniment. Joubert-Cailler, who has recorded Marais's vast collection of viols in their entirety for RICERCAR, has now rearranged the bass parts with his two colleagues in accordance with the 18th century style, and recorded five fascinating suites in the form of two-voiced works.While maintaining the style of his father's works, which were sometimes bold and daring, this recording conveys the beautiful musicality of Sainte-Colombes II with a neat interpretation of the general style of the time. This is a rich recording filled with the charms characteristic of French Baroque, such as phrase narration, ornamentation, and rhythms of the dances. Naxos Japan
