Description:

Spontini's masterpiece is now performed by Rousset on a full complement of ancient instruments! The French classical music revival has been led by Christophe Rousset and Les Tarrands-Liriques, who have been making headlines by discovering and introducing many Italian and French masterpieces that were popular in the 18th century, but buried in history. In 2018, the bicentennial of Gounod's birth, they made the first recording (BZ1037) of the version of "Faust" on ancient instruments, showing that they have a high aptitude for music of the Romantic period. This time, they will face squarely an important work from the early 19th century, which cannot be avoided if one traces the history of Western opera. The composer is Gaspare Spontini, an Italian composer of the same generation as Beethoven. While the saint was busy in Vienna composing and revising "Leonore," the prototype for "Fidelio," "The Priestess of Vesta" received its world premiere in Paris under the auspices of Josephine, the wife of the French emperor Napoleon, and was greeted with great enthusiasm. This work was a great success for Spontini, who was later to enjoy overwhelming fame in both France and Prussia.Set in ancient Rome, this masterpiece depicts the great events surrounding the extinguishing of the fire in the temple, which was considered to be unbreakable, with thrilling musical developments that could only have occurred during the revolutionary period. This is a masterful performance that brings out the true charm of the work. The soloists included such major names as Madouf on natural trumpet and Claire McIntyre on trombone, as well as a new generation of Shunsuke Isobe on clarinet, and a new generation of singers such as Rena Shunsuke on clarinet. The dependability of Les Talents Lilique's richly shaded performance is also exceptional, with a wide range of musicians from natural trumpeter Madouf and trombonist Claire McIntyre to new-generation talents such as clarinetist Reina Isobe. In addition to the performance content that allows the audience to fully enjoy the charms of the operas of the revolutionary period, the 150-page commentary in French and English, which is a unique feature of the Bru Zane label, is a delight.
