Description:

Polish-German composer Philip Scharwenka composed three symphonies, a violin concerto, and chamber music, but he was often overshadowed by his brother Franz Xaver, also a composer and world-class pianist. In recent years, however, his works have begun to be reappraised one after another. Philippe was also an excellent teacher, teaching music and composition at the Scharwenka Conservatory, which his brother opened in Berlin and New York in 1881, and produced such great conductors as Otto Klemperer and Oscar Fleet. Also, conductors of the time, Nikisch and Hans Richter performed Philippe's symphonies. Among his works, which are not numerous here, are chamber works for violin, viola, and piano. Philippe's wife Marianne, who was also a renowned violinist, handles the strings beautifully. The violin here is played by the virtuoso Breuninger, who won second prize at the 1997 Queen Elisabeth International Competition. The viola is played by Bertheau, winner of the Hindemith Prize at the 2005 Geneva International Competition.Piano is by world-class German player, Triendl. Naxos Japan
