The group's program at La Folle Journée au Japon in 2018 was a great hit with the audience as it explored the unexpected connection between traditional Armenian music and European ancient music. This time, the group focused on the Italian Lauda, one of the most royal areas of medieval music, and produced a new recording that strongly impresses us with the variety of music that was hidden within it. The group has narrowed its focus to the "Lauda of Cortona," composed in central Tuscany in the 13th century, a time of great turmoil on the Italian peninsula as the conflict between the Pope and the German Emperor intensified amid the Crusader expeditions and the rise of the Mongol Empire. The performance will be based on the interpretation supported by solid musicological research, using not only European instruments such as the medieval fiddle and recorder, but also the oud, an oriental stringed instrument, various bagpipes, and the nickelharpa, which is also popular in Northern European music.Lauda's repetition of simple slang poems (in Italian) for the easy-to-understand people is strong and memorable, beside the exquisiteness of polyphonic church music such as organum. The commentary that reveals the secret of the sound world, where the enigmatic medieval and the tropical brightness intermingle bewitchingly, is also noteworthy. Naxos Japan
