A friend of Sam Gendel, Brazilian-born, Los Angeles-based multi-string guitarist and songwriter Fabiano do Nascimento now releases a new album on the prestigious Leaving Records label. Das Nuvens is a crisp, blissful, groove-oriented showcase of the finest from a mature musician who blends the traditional idioms of his native Brazil (samba, choro, etc.) with the contemporary and experimental elements of jazz, pop, and electronic music. Raised in Rio and São Paulo and moving to Southern California as a teenager, Nascimento's approach to guitar and songwriting is influenced by his youth in Brazil's extremely fertile musical environment. His entry into this lineage was inevitable. Coming from a musical family, the young Nascimento read music, played the piano, and dabbled with the flute, but picked up the guitar at age 10. His affinity with the guitar was immediate, definitive, and unequivocal. His encounter with the guitar accelerated his decades-long journey into the history of Brazilian classical music.Das Nuvens is a free and exploratory work in which musicians who have mastered a clear musical language attempt to apply their skills to a broader, more experimental mode of expression. Composed primarily of meditative, pointillistic refrains, track 1 is titled "Babel," a reference to the legend of man's attempt to build a tower to heaven. While superficially a harsh metaphor, this myth expresses the beauty of our world's dizzying array of languages (modes of existence) and the subsequent cultural exchange through the arts. In this regard, it is a fitting title to open the album, which deconstructs and collages not only contemporary and classic Brazilian idioms and pop idioms, but also the diverse indigenous music Nascimento has encountered and studied during his travels as a touring musician.Recorded in Fabiano's home studio with longtime friend and collaborator Daniel Santiago (who also did the album's art design), Das Nuvens recalls the windswept wilderness (the wistful "Thrdwrld," which sounds like Morricone gently fluttering into a trap) and the lush Latin American forests of Nascimento's youth (especially "Aurora"), while at the same time offering healing and inspiration. The CD release is available only in Japan and includes a bonus track, "Das Nuvens," which will be released on June 23, 2023.
