A cult classic and debut album released in 1987 by SLAUGHTER, a thrash metal band from Toronto, Canada, which is said to have influenced the later emergence of death metal. Formed in 1984, the trio of Dave Hewson (vocals/guitar), Terry Sadler (vocals/bass), and Ron Summers (drums) produced a sound that stood out as particularly raw even among the thrash metal of the time—an intense blend of punk-inspired energy and extreme speed. The album features tracks like the title track “Strappado,” which charges forward with thunderous force; “F.O.D. (Fuck Of Death),” which has a distinctly hardcore punk feel; and “Nocturnal Hell,” which exudes an evil atmosphere—these rough-edged yet ferocious tracks left a powerful impact on the underground scene of the time. The raw playing and dirty sound can truly be described as the epitome of early thrash, and it is also interesting to note that the album already contained the radical intensity that would later lead to death metal. In addition to the original mixes from that era, this reissue includes numerous unedited rough mixes, allowing listeners to experience the raw production process and the band’s fierce early intensity more directly.
