Dramatic melodies and charm: La Festa Musicale's recording of G.J. Werner's "Requiem"! The second collection of Werner's works by the virtuoso group La Festa Musicale is the "Requiem". Austrian-born Gregor Joseph Werner (1693-1766), a composer who contributed to the birth of the Viennese Classical School, became the chief musician at the court of the Esterházy family in 1728, a position he held for the rest of his life (after Werner's death, Haydn became the chief musician at the court). Werner is known as a prolific composer, but most of his works are vocal pieces related to church music. This album includes the Requiem composed in 1763, Passion motets, and an overture to an oratorio for instrumental music. Werner's music, which can be described as the art of pre-Haydn counterpoint, is a masterpiece in itself. Lajos Lovatokai, the orchestra's conductor, has studied Werner's works for a long time, and this recording is a perfect example. Werner's works, with their dramatic melodies, are sung by a group of splendid singers who are well versed in Baroque music.
