The Tug-of-War Between the Demise of the Castrato and the Development of Opera A Collection of Arias for Giovanni Rubinelli, Whom Charles Burney Described as “One of the Three Great Castrati of the Late 18th Century” The renowned music historian Charles Barney counts Giovanni Rubinelli (1753–1829) among the three greatest castrati of the late 18th century. As the era of opera seria and the castrati drew to a close, Rubinelli was one of the key singers of its final phase. Although many composers wrote works for him, his voice was not the generally preferred high soprano, but rather a lower contralto-like timbre. This CD traces Rubinelli’s artistic journey. He made his debut at the age of 16 in Ludwigsburg in Antonio Sacchini’s Caliloë, appeared in Antonio Salieri’s Europa Riconosciuta at the opening performance of La Scala in Milan in 1778, and later, in the late 1780s, he made guest appearances in London, singing in works including Handel’s Giulio Cesare. Italian countertenor Filippo Mineccia, who specializes in the repertoire of the castrato era, vividly brings this historical singer to life through his emotionally rich and technically sophisticated singing. At the same time, this production presents Rubini as a figure who symbolizes the evolution of opera—from the era of the castrati’s dazzling virtuosity to the new, concise, and emotionally rich arias seen in Gluck’s operatic reforms.
