Volume 6 of Allard's remarkable series is the first volume of the Mean Clavier Works! This is the sixth volume of Arall's project to record all of Bach's keyboard works. The first volume of the "Mean Clavier Works" is now available! In the previous five volumes, Arall has recorded works by the young Bach (and works by other composers who influenced him) up to the Weimar period. The release of the first volume of his Mean Clavier cycle is perfectly timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the first volume's publication in 2022. However, Arall is a man of his word, and CD 1 is a clavichord performance of works from Wilhelm Friedemann Bach's Clavier Pieces, the parent body of the "Mean Rule," and other works, setting the listener's ears and mind in front of the "Mean Rule. It is as if one has wandered into a room where the Bach father and son are actually performing the pieces. In the "mean rule," the pieces are arranged in the order prescribed by Arall himself. The instrument used here is a "historical" harpsichord, a Johann Adolph Hass from 1740. It has three tiers of keys, and its delicate yet colorful and powerful tone is very appealing. Arall suggests that Bach must have had a wide variety of keyboard instruments at his disposal, especially during his Leipzig years, and that he probably loved to play large instruments such as the one used here.This performance gives a sense of the great expanse of the universe that is the law of averages.
