A victim of Nazism, a collection of Mendelssohn's chamber works! The Silesian String Quartet won the Gramophone Award for the complete Bacewicz String Quartets (CHAN10904)! In this latest release, the quartet couples the chamber music of Joachim Mendelssohn (1892-1943), a Polish composer who was a victim of Nazism, with two string quartets restored from Bacewicz's manuscripts. Mendelssohn studied music in Warsaw and Berlin before moving to Paris in 1929, where he joined the Association des Jeunes Musiciens Polonais (Association of Young Polish Musicians), which was founded to promote the study, publication, and promotion of the works of young Polish composers Bacewicz also joined the Association. Bacewicz also received support from the Association and Paderewski, and studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Both composers continued their musical activities after returning to Warsaw, but Mendelssohn was imprisoned in the ghetto and murdered by the Gestapo in 1943, and his records were destroyed by fire, so only a few of his works were published in France.Two works by Bacewicz are also rare and not listed in the catalog, with scores prepared by the Royal String Quartet based on manuscripts preserved in the National Library in Warsaw.
