Russell Oberlin

Description:

The first collection of recordings by the countertenor hailed as the greatest vocal wonder of the 20th centuryAmerican countertenor Russell Oberlin (1928-2016) is now available for the first time all together on American Decca in this 9-CD box set. Oberlin sets himself apart from other countertenors with his "mystically beautiful voice," virtuosity, expressiveness, and naturalness. He can effortlessly lead his own tenor voice two octaves beyond the alto range, and his singing is powerful and masculine, sounding even and pure in pitch in all vocal ranges. Remastered from the original master tapes, seven of the nine albums are now available on CD for the first time, Oberlin was hailed as one of the greatest "vocal wonders" of the 20th century. His repertoire ranges from medieval chants, English lute songs, Renaissance choral music, Baroque operatic arias, and German songs to musicals and film songs. The set features the New York Pro Musica, which played a pioneering role in historical performances. The ensemble was founded in 1952 by Noah Greenberg. Russell Oberlin's album of Handel's most famous arias (CD 5) was acclaimed worldwide and is still praised today. With the medieval music drama Daniel (CD 2), New York Pro Musica made recording history. She also sings baroque cantatas by Buxtehude, Handel and Telemann (CD 7).The Russell Oberlin Recital (CD 8), with songs ranging from English medieval music to German romanticism, is being released on CD for the first time. The four songs from films and musicals recorded in New York in 1959 with an unidentified pianist are being released for the first time. The rarely recorded "entertainment" "Facade" (CD 9) by William Walton features Hermione Kingold and Russell Oberlin as unique and entertaining narrators. The 56-page booklet features an insightful essay by Pierre Ruhe, publishing director of "Early Music America," as well as numerous rare photographs. In original jacket. Please note that some of the recordings may have been omitted from the collection, even though it is claimed to be a complete collection. Universal Music/IMS
