Description:

Peter Bernstein, a successful guitarist in New York City, asks himself the question of an uncertain future and anxious feelings in the midst of a pandemic in the city of New York. It is also titled "What Comes Next"! The latest album by Peter Bernstein, a successful guitarist in New York City, who is unable to perform amidst the pandemic in the city of New York, and who asks himself the question of his anxious feelings about his uncertain future. The title "What Comes Next" is striking. It was recorded in New York City in June during such a pandemic situation in New York. With the city shut down, Bernstein says he was able to devote the three months leading up to the recording to plenty of compositional work. Piano is Sullivan Fortner, a highly sought-after pianist for Grammy-winning vocalist Cecil McLorin Salvant's albums and Roy Hargrove. In mid-August, a live stream of the group performing at the Smoke jazz club was streamed worldwide to great acclaim. This album is also dedicated to jazz legends Jimmy Cobb (ds) and Harold Mayburn (p), who played with Peter many times during his lifetime and passed away last year and this year, respectively. He began playing the piano at age 8 and switched to guitar at age 13. He studied music at the New School University in Greenwich Village with Kenny Barron and others. He was invited by Jim Hall to work at the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival, and began his professional career in earnest. He is also a regular member of Mike Rudorn's Groover Quartet, which performs weekly at the Smoke jazz club, and his annual week-long show at the Village Vanguard in New York City is sold out every day. The recording consists of nine songs. It consists of six Bernstein originals, the standard "We'll Be Together Again," and three Jazzman originals by Gillespie and Sonny Rollins. All of Bernstein's original compositions are highly accomplished, including the ballad "Empty Streets," which was written in view of empty city streets. Recorded June 25, 2020 at Sear Sound Studio, New York City. The jacket features a striking image of Peter Bernstein standing in an empty city.
