Latest Recording, March 2015 Schaller Conducts the Philharmonie Festiva Bruckner’s Symphony No. 0 Symphony No. 0 is now featured in the Bruckner symphony series led by German conductor Gert Schaller, who was born in Bamberg. Composed by Bruckner in his mid-40s, and is generally considered to have been composed after Symphony No. 1. However, the “No. 0” was excluded from the official symphony series because, in his final years, Bruckner himself crossed out the number “No. 2”—which had originally appeared at the beginning of the score—and added the German word “annuliert,” meaning “invalid.” However, with the release of recordings by Haitink in the 1960s and by Asahina and Barenboim in the late 1970s, and as an increasing number of conductors—including Chailly, Inbal, Skrowaczewski, and more recently Young and Bosch—are including it in their complete symphony sets, the work appears to be gaining wider acceptance. For ears already familiar with Bruckner’s symphonies, the Symphony in D minor may be described as a work full of the joy of discovering an unexpected charm—even amidst the Brucknerian sound reminiscent of the First and Second Symphonies. Given that this recording features the collaboration between Schaller and the Philharmonia Festiva—a duo that has consistently delivered high-quality performances throughout the series—we can expect this work to gain even greater recognition.
