PUNGENTSTENCH, the mavericks of Austrian death metal, have reissued their 1990 debut album. This is a seminal work that exudes a particularly vile and primal charm, even within the golden age of death metal. While 1990 marked the year death metal spread worldwide, this album presented a unique sound—a forceful fusion of death metal and early grindcore—born from a sensibility distinct from that of their Nordic and American counterparts. The songs reject any form of refinement, constructed solely through the relentless repetition of filthy, heavy riffs, devoid of melody or technical flair. Sludgy, viscous slow sections intertwine with violent, high-speed bursts that accelerate without warning, while the bass’s low-end rumbles continuously, emitting a putrid stench that permeates the entire track. At the same time, elements of D-beat and thrash metal blend in naturally, creating a unique driving force born from an unbalanced mix of speed, doom, and grind. A macabre sensibility laced with black humor is also a hallmark of PUNGENTSTENCH; this is by no means a parody, but rather a device that serves to further accentuate the music’s filth and aggression. While this album may lack flashiness, it is an extremely important early work that pushes the essential violence and primal nature of death metal to the absolute limit. The CD is a double-disc set, with the bonus disc featuring rough mixes and live recordings originally provided for the compilation *Death Is Just the Beginning*.
