Walt Disney Concert Hall erupts. Dudamel and the LA Phil in the film music of John Williams With an appearance by Darth Vader. And Perlman in "Schindler's List". John Williams, the great master of film music, has produced a long line of classics in partnership with the director Steven Spielberg. This film captures the opening event of the 2014/2015 season at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, in which the hall's resident Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, joined by violinist Itzhak Perlman, performed his music. The programme opens with the ＜Olympic Fanfare and Theme＞, written for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; the piece won Williams a Grammy, and he has gone on to write music for the three subsequent Olympic Games held in the United States. Next comes ＜Soundings＞, premiered at the inaugural concert of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and inspired by the building's striking modern exterior. In ＜Schindler's List＞ Perlman takes the stage, playing this tender, aching music with exceptional sensitivity and technique, and he also takes the solo in ＜Fiddler on the Roof＞, played on screen by Isaac Stern. ＜Catch Me If You Can＞, included at Dudamel's enthusiastic request, is a jazz-tinged score that evokes the film's 1960s setting and draws on the composer's own youthful experience as a jazz musician. Then comes ＜Star Wars＞ - and for the encore, "The Imperial March" from The Empire Strikes Back, John Williams himself takes the podium, with Darth Vader making an appearance. Also on the programme are a moving contribution from the Los Angeles Children's Chorus in ＜Amistad＞, the historical film about slavery in America, and ＜Jaws＞.
