Description:

National Ballet of Canada, 1987 Ballet: “The Merry Widow” Franz Lehár’s [1870–1948] masterpiece operetta, “The Merry Widow.” Translated into Japanese, the title means “The Cheerful Widow.” The story follows Hanna, a young widow who has inherited a vast fortune, and Count Danilo, who is smitten with her. As financial issues complicate their romance and the flirtatious antics of another couple are thrown into the mix, a lively and chaotic commotion ensues. The entire production is brimming with witty humor and tears, all wrapped in exquisite music. It is this perfect blend that defines *The Merry Widow*. This video presents a ballet adaptation of *The Merry Widow*. The music was arranged by John Lanchbery [1923–2003], a well-known ballet conductor who also adapted operas such as *Die Fledermaus* and *The Tales of Hoffmann* into ballets, opening up new possibilities for the art form. Choreographed by the legendary Ronald Hind, this production features masterful dancers filling the stage with beautiful movements. Among them, Yoko Ichino, in the role of Valencienne, is particularly noteworthy. Of course, the commanding presence of the lead, Karen Kane, is also a sight of supreme beauty.
