Will Westerners Understand? Japanese-Style Expressions of Love Mari Kobayashi is a mezzo-soprano who has been active in France since graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts. She has teamed up with French saxophonist Durangle—a Japanophile—to tackle works by Japanese composers and those inspired by Japonisme. The program is packed with highlights, ranging from Akira Ifukube’s masterpiece—accompanied solely by timpani—to Toshio Hosokawa’s composition based on a poem by Izumi Shikibu, and a piece by Ichiro Nohira that demands virtuosic technique.
