The piano-less trio, featuring Sonny Rollins, who turned 90 this year, and Han Bennink, who made his name with Dolphy's "Last Date," a tremendous performance in Holland in 1967, is a dynamic performance without stagnation, weaving in a number of song themes. Of course, this is the first time it has been released! Sonny Rollins, a giant star, recorded in 1967, which has never been released even as an unauthorized recording. This is a completely unreleased sound recording of Sonny Rollins at the peak of his powers! Unlike John Coltrane, who was under contract from Prestige to Atlantic to Impulse without a break, Sonny Rollins was often without an exclusive contract for a period of time, during which time there were no official recordings for a while. For example, between 1958, when he recorded "Sonny Rollins & The Contemporary Leaders" for Contemporary, and 1962, when he signed his first RCA contract, "The Bridge," and between his final Impulse album, "East Broadway Rundown," and 1972, when he signed with Milestone and recorded "The Next Album" until recording "The Next Album," and so on.However, Rollins continued to be active during this gap, and some live recordings from Europe were released on unauthorized labels, but there were some years when even these recordings did not exist at all. The previously unreleased performance in Holland is from 1967, when no other recordings of the band were made, and is an extremely rare find! The members are a piano-less saxophone trio with Han Bennink as a drummer, and it is very exciting to hear Rollins at his best. Han Bennink became internationally known for his participation in Eric Dolphy's "Last Date" in 1964, and later played with Misha Mengelberg and Willem Broeker in the Instant Composers Pool (ICP), becoming a core member of the European new jazz scene. He is an artist who has formed the core of the jazz scene in Europe as a whole. Here he is backing Rollins with Ruud, the brother of the famous pianist Pim Jacobs.Here Rollins was in high spirits and in great shape, even compared to his performances in Europe around this time, such as with Jimmy Merritt and Max Roach in Graz (November 1966) and with the Kenny Drew Trio in Copenhagen (September 1968). Even during the long performance, the band's rich ideas are never exhausted and the phrases are overflowing, including phrases from "St. Thomas" and "Alfie," as well as quotes from numerous song themes. The melodic lines and dynamic expression are at their best when intertwined with the strong drumming of Han Bennink, who delivers first-rate rhythms from swing to free, and is sometimes driven by the music.
