Description:

Mack Avenue" Erroll Garner Octave Remastered Series "Erroll Garner's Last RecordingsRecorded in the fall of 1973, one year after his first and last visit to Japan in 1972. Including "Close to You," Garner's style is in full swing! This "Magician" album, the 11th of the 12 albums in the Erroll Garner Octave Remastered Series on Mack Avenue Records, was recorded in the fall of 1973, one year after Garner's first and last visit to Japan in 1972. It was recorded in the fall of 1973, one year after Garner's first and last visit to Japan in 1972. The quartet members were already different from those in Japan except for Jose Mangual (congas), and Bob Cranshaw (b) and Grady Tate (ds) replaced Ernest McCarty, Jr. and Jimmy Smith (ds) who had visited Japan. (b) and Grady Tate (ds). The album begins with an unpredictable intro to Burt Bacharach's classic "Close To You," followed by a well-balanced mix of his own originals and standards such as "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "Yesterdays. One of his own compositions, "One To Watch Over Me," is one of the best-known songs on the album. One of his own compositions, "One Good Turn," was performed by guest organists Norman Gold and Jackie Williams (originally a drummer, but playing tambourine here), and the gospel-like theme was followed by a groove-filled performance. The groove-filled performance builds from a gospel-like theme. The other originals on this album are also very appealing, with "NightWind" a romantic ballad reminiscent of "Misty," and "It Gets Better Every Time" with its growling blues playing that could only be Garner's. The last song, "Grill On The Hill," is a great example of Garner's unique style. The last song, "Grill On The Hill," as usual, is an addition that first saw the light of day in this series, and is another simple but memorable 32-bar original.Garner's playing is also in great form, riding the rhythm created by Cranshaw - Tate. Unfortunately, this was Garner's last recording. Shortly after this, he became ill and retired from performing in early 1975, and died in 1977 without ever recovering.
