Alan Broadbent was born in 1947 in Auckland, New Zealand. He is a popular pianist in Japan, having released a series of piano trio works on the Discovery label and other labels. He is also well known for his compositions and arrangements for singers such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, and many others. His latest piano trio album is now available on the Savant label. This album was recorded in 2018 in a private studio in Alan Broadbent's home. The trio consists of bassist Harvey S., a friend of Broadbent's from his days at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and drummer Billy Mintz, who used to play with Broadbent in L.A. The three musicians, all of whom are of the same age, play together in a mature and harmonious manner. The album contains nine songs, including three Broadbent originals. The opening track, the lively four-beat "Clifford Notes," is literally an original dedicated to Clifford Brown. The second song, "Minority" by Gigi Grice, is the opening track on Broadbent's influential album Everybody Digs Bill Evans. Other songs on the album include the ballad "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and "On a Misty Night," both of which are Broadbent's signature tunes. The three musicians' almost telepathic communication throughout the sessions provided a wide range of emotions, grace, simplicity, soulfulness, and a hint of blues filling, resulting in an album that is naturally recorded and in good mood.Broadbent is a very talented musician," says Broadbent. The recording was engineered by Harvey S., who knows Broadbent's sound inside and out. This work is especially recommended for piano trio fans who prefer an orthodox style of playing.
