On this album, Charles McStone-Smith brings together gems by the three great masters of organ music—Louis Vierne, Charles Tournemire, and Maurice Duruflé—the three great masters of organ music—and fully exploits the rich potential of the Rufatti organ at Buckfast Abbey. Vierne’s *Organ Symphony No. 5* is a work that explores the world of the chromatic scale while vividly portraying two main themes. In the conclusion, the themes merge, leading to a magnificent, triumphant climax. In his hymn to the Virgin Mary, *Ave Maris Stella* (originally improvised and later notated), Charles Tournemire evokes the spirit of French mysticism through sensual color and rich harmony. Maurice Duruflé’s *Prelude, Adagio, and Choral Variations* is a monumental work lasting over 20 minutes, based on the Pentecost hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus” (“Come, Creator Spirit”). Its overwhelming power, enough to shake the earth, evokes profound emotion. Charles McStone-Smith serves as organist at Buckfast Abbey. After graduating with honors from the Royal Academy of Music, he is currently studying French Baroque and Romantic organ works under Christophe Mantoux at the Church of Saint-Séverin in Paris. He has served as an organ fellow at Hereford Cathedral, New College, Oxford, Westminster Abbey, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and King’s College London. Since 2014, he has participated annually as one of the festival organists at the Edington Music Festival, known for its liturgical music, and is a talented young musician who frequently performs on BBC Radio 3.
