And despite the fact that many of them are over 40 years old, this discography is as youthful and "timeless" as Michel Beloff himself. Born in France in 1950, pianist Michel Beloff gave his first recital in Paris in 1967 and won the first Olivier Messiaen International Competition that same year. The president of the jury for this competition was Olivier Messiaen himself. Since then, Belov has built a remarkable international career, performing with world-renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, Kurt Masur, Daniel Barenboim, Andre Previn, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, and Charles Dutoit. Belov's extensive discography includes complete piano and orchestral works by Liszt, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky, as well as numerous solo piano works by Debussy, Messiaen (he is a renowned interpreter of this composer in particular), Bartók, Schumann, and Mussorgsky. He was also acclaimed for his duets with violinist Augustin Dumay and pianist Jean-Philippe Collard, and made excellent recordings with them, which are also included in this box. Works by Messiaen, Debussy, Prokofiev, and Mussorgsky are the true highlights of this edition. The box set includes three discs' worth of works on CD for the first time, with a bonus previously unreleased recording on Disc 42: the 1978 master tape of an excellent and remarkably mature Beethoven performance by the young Michel Beloff, and the 1969 master tape of a Beethoven performance by the young Gerhard Schwarzenegger, Together with the 1969 recording of Bach's "French Overture," it adds new color to the glorious mosaic.It brings additional focus to an illustrious career that has included numerous artistic successes not only in the concert hall but also in the recording studio.
