Legendary chorus master Wilhelm Pitz (1897–1973), who contributed to countless Wagner productions since the festival’s postwar revival, leads the Bayreuth Festival Chorus and Orchestra in a recording of “Wagner Choral Works” made on August 22, 1958—now released for the first time worldwide on SA-CD. Recorded to mark the 75th anniversary of Wagner’s death, this album features famous choral scenes from *The Flying Dutchman*, *Tannhäuser*, *Lohengrin*, *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg*, *Götterdämmerung*, and *Parsifal*. Pitz raised the standard of performances in Aachen alongside Karajan; at Karajan’s request, he became the chorus master when the festival resumed for the first time after the war in 1951, and went on to create legendary productions with successive renowned conductors until 1972. The male voices offer a robust and earthy sound, while the female voices create a lustrous and cohesive ensemble; the crystal-clear sound quality of DG’s earliest stereo recordings captures the excitement of that era. Recommended not only for enthusiasts seeking the origins of Wagner performance but also for beginners who wish to enjoy famous choral pieces on a single disc. Includes two tracks from “Parsifal” conducted by Jochum and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. No bilingual lyrics included.
