Description:
In 1849, Europe was in a state of political turmoil, and Schumann, who disliked conflict, decided to leave his native Dresden and move to Düsseldorf. The three collections of songs composed that year are a diverse mix of solos, duets, and quartets, all on different themes. The three songs are varied in theme: "Love Plays" on poems by Rückert, his favorite poet; "Spanish Song Plays" and "Spanish Love Songs" on poems by Geibel, a young poet who had fallen in love with him but had been away for some time; and songs with Spanish rhythms, sung in key passages by four singers and two pianists. Although not often heard, Schumann's mature compositional technique and exquisite brushwork make this a fascinating collection. Naxos Japan
