Description:
The saxophone, invented in the 1840s by the Belgian composer Adolphe Sax, was championed primarily by French composers who took an interest in this new instrument, and it spread widely across genres. In this album, the “Kenari Quartet,” an ensemble of young musicians, explores the spirit evoked by this instrument with its unique and varied timbres. Max Dubois was a composer who studied at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique in Tours and won the Prix de Rome in 1955. Since its premiere in 1962, this “Quartet” has become a staple of the genre’s repertoire. Pierné was the winner of the Prix de Rome in 1882. He is known for his numerous playful compositions. Fauré, who studied under Nadia Boulanger, composed a series of works for saxophone from the mid-1930s through the early 1960s. This little quartet also has a lighthearted atmosphere. Desenclos was the winner of the 1942 Prix de Rome. This lyrical and expressive work was commissioned by the Marcel Mule Quartet. Bozza, who had Italian ancestry and was also a talented violinist, composed works that are, as expected, melodious and beautiful. It is dedicated to the Paris Quartet. Florent Schmitt, winner of the 1900 Prix de Rome, is famous for his numerous orchestral and piano works. This quartet is a magnificent piece that begins with a fugue led by the tenor saxophone.
