A musical tale based on "The Tale of the Heike" by contemporary American composer Daron Aric Hagen. A Japanese koto and cello duet is joined by a vocalist using his own voice to depict a fantastic Heike picture scroll. Furthermore, in the final chapter, electronics and acoustics overlap, inviting the audience into the world of the Pure Land. Based in New York and Japan, Duo Yumeno has been exploring new chamber music rooted in Japanese and classical traditions, and has commissioned new works from internationally renowned contemporary composers such as Toshi Ichiyanagi and Daron Hagen. He has been involved in many premieres of new works by composers active in the New York music scene, and his performances have been highly acclaimed in the New York Times, New York Classical Review, and other publications. The booklet commentary is in English only, but the Japanese commentary and lyrics can be uploaded and read at the address given on the inlay side. In my concerto for koto and string quartet, I have attempted to musicalize the Japanese classic literature "The Tale of Genji". In composing this duet suite for koto and cello, I decided to use "The Tale of the Heike," a military tale told by biwa players who traveled around the country. The story is about a man who is proud, but not for long, just like a dream on a spring night.Even the fiercest of men perish at last, just as the dust before the wind. The beginning of the story, which begins with the words, "Even the fiercest of men will not perish at last," expresses the Buddhist view of impermanence that is at the heart of the story. In this series of works, the author attempted to depict the world of the Heike clan by focusing not on the warriors who led the time, but on the women who were tossed about by the warring world. The three women featured all entered Buddhism in their later years. This "Heike Suite" was composed between 2015 and 2022 and dedicated to the duo Yumeno. It is a culmination of my gratitude to the duo for leading me into the world of Japanese history and literature, and for continuing to perform this series of works, the fruit of which has been created, in numerous venues.
