The ensemble led by Martini, which has already recorded several operas and oratorios for Naxos and is gaining acclaim for its solid performances, presents this oratorio—based on an episode from the Old Testament and renowned as a masterpiece from Handel’s later years—in a performance brimming with dignity. Widely recognized as one of Handel’s greatest masterpieces, *Solomon* is the most sensual of his Bible-based oratorios. In the magnificent and intricate choruses, seven of the eight voice parts sing passionate, deeply emotional love songs. At the end of Part I, Solomon, in his completed temple, lures the queen into a cedar grove and seduces her. Part II centers on King Solomon’s wisdom in determining the true mother of a newborn child. Part Three begins with the famous “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” and depicts the story of the Queen of Sheba’s visit and her fascination with King Solomon’s magnificent palace; it also conceals Handel’s shrewd intention to curry favor with his patron, King George II.
