Description:
The second prize winner of the first Chopin Competition, a brilliant and unexpected? Although Shostakovich was the titleholder of the first Chopin Competition, his main field was never piano works. The few piano works that he did produce were also ascetic, or at any rate, stiff in style, but the sincerity that overflows from them is immensely persuasive. Needless to say, the 24 Preludes and Fugues, written with the great Bach's cycle of averages in mind, are the most important of his piano works, and are filled with a wide variety of musical ideas and various counterpoint experiments that are serious, humorous, or solemn in mood. The piece is full of varied musical ideas and various counterpoints.
