Volume 6 of Aral’s highly anticipated series is *The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1*! This is the sixth installment in Aral’s project to record all of Bach’s keyboard works: *The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1* is here! In the previous five volumes, Aral has recorded works ranging from the young Bach (and works by other composers who influenced him) through to the Weimar period. The release of this first volume of *The Well-Tempered Clavier* comes at an exquisite moment, as 2022 marks the 300th anniversary of its composition. That said, true to Alard’s style, CD 1 begins with pieces from the *Clavier-Stücke* for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach—which served as the foundation for the *Well-Tempered Clavier*—performed on a clavichord. This serves as a prelude to prepare the listener’s ears and heart for the *Well-Tempered Clavier*. It feels as if you’ve wandered into the very room where Bach and his son were actually performing these pieces. In *The Well-Tempered Clavier*, the pieces are arranged in the order determined by Alard himself. The instrument used here is a “historical” harpsichord, a 1740 Johann Adolf Haas. Featuring three manuals, this instrument captivates with a sound that is delicate yet remarkably colorful and powerful. Alar argues that Bach, especially during his time in Leipzig, would have had free access to a variety of keyboard instruments and likely enjoyed playing large-scale instruments like the one used here.
