Hans Winterberg, born in Prague, was a composer influenced by Schoenberg who fused complex rhythms, impressionism, and Central European folk songs. Because he was of Jewish descent, he was subjected to forced labor and life in concentration camps under the Nazis before emigrating to Germany; Although he achieved success in the 1950s, his work was long forgotten—partly because the rise of the avant-garde made it difficult for him to receive due recognition during his lifetime, and partly because his scores were withheld from the public after his death in 1991. His Symphony No. 2 was begun in 1943, during a harsh period of oppression. It features a “from darkness to light” structure, progressing from a solemn and ominous opening to the jubilant fanfare of the final movement—which was completed after the war—while interweaving references to folk dances with Impressionist sounds. The “Piano Concerto No. 2,” featuring the virtuoso Powell as soloist, features an approachable theme that develops broadly while taking on lyrical expressions and funeral march-like shades of mood, eventually transforming brilliantly into a capricious fugue. It is a charming work, full of lightheartedness and technical brilliance. The Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Roland Kurtigh, masterfully brings out the dynamic emotional expression inherent in the work. Naxos Japan
