San Petronio Capella Musicale (Old Instruments & Vocal Ensemble) Koror Tempolis (Vocal Ensemble) Michele Van Nelli (Choral Conductor) Recorded October 2, 2018 at the Basilica of San Petronio, Bologna (Italy) Total recording time:75 min. This album features the music of the Bologna School of Music, which had a profound influence on the musical world of northern Italy throughout the late Renaissance and Baroque periods, and the music that resonated in the Cathedral of San Petronio, its base, performed there. The work is by Colonna, a master of the early Bolognese school and music director of the cathedral. Two groups of four soloists, a chorus, and a basso continuo are placed on the second floor facing each other on either side of the inner sanctuary, and an orchestra is placed in the center of the second floor, so that the music descends to the audience on the first floor, creating a heavenly musical experience. The orchestra is placed in the center of the second floor, and the music is played as if it were pouring down to the audience on the first floor. In addition to the contrast in volume between the soloists and chorus, the way the music calls to each other from both sides is truly magnificent.O magnum divini amoris opus Oh, the great bishop of God," is a motet for Pentecost dedicated to St. Petronius, a 5th century bishop of Bologna. Petronius was later canonized and became the patron saint of the city of Bologna, and the cathedral is named after him. (Naxos Japan)
