Description:
Gustave Kerker is a German-born composer who began playing the cello at the age of seven, aspired to become a musician, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 20. He began composing operas while performing in Kentucky theaters. His early operetta "The Cadet" was very well received, and he later moved to New York City, where he served as principal conductor at the Casino Theatre and wrote many works for Broadway. His masterpiece, "The New York Beauties," was performed 700 times in London in 1898, and its reputation spread throughout the world. Today, however, most of his fame has been forgotten, and only a small portion of this fascinating music has been heard. His music shares the same satirical spirit and exquisite orchestration with Arthur Sullivan, the famous English operetta composer, and his beautiful melodies are very much appreciated by people.
