Adrian Boult, who recorded Vaughan Williams' complete symphonies twice in the 1950s and 1960s and was trusted by the composer himself to premiere many of his works, recorded Vaughan Williams' Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6 live at the Royal Albert Hall in the 1970s. Paul Bailey, who has been trusted around the world to remaster reissued recordings from the original BBC tapes, has done a meticulous job of bringing the recordings to life in stereo. The Fifth is the first time it has been released on CD, and its great appeal lies in its gentle yet powerful climax and its grand sweep, expressions that only a master of the work and the composer could have achieved. The recording of No. 6, made with the same conductor, orchestra, and venue as the premiere, was previously released on CD (BBC Classics/IMP), but this time the sound has been remastered with outstandingly improved startup and clearer contours, and from the crumbling fortissimo at the beginning of the work The sound has been re-mastered to improve the rise of the sound and the definition has been made clearer.This is an album in which you can enjoy Boldt's command and deep interpretation of the works, which is hard to believe that he is in his eighties.
