A superb program straight from the source, unraveling the roots of French keyboard music before the Couperin family It is widely known that in the late 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” talented composers such as Lully and Marais flourished under his cultural policies, and French-style music, which garnered international attention, reached its peak. However, this development did not arise from “nothing.” French court culture had already made significant strides during the reign of Louis XIII, his predecessor. In the realm of music, it was Louis XIII who established the royal string ensemble known as “The King’s 24 Violins,” and it was also during this period that the clavichord made its entry into the world of solo instrumental music—where the lute and organ had previously held overwhelming dominance—and began to develop while emulating the musical styles of those two instruments. It is important to note that Louis XIII himself was an avid player of the clavichord and kept the instrument at court. Arnaud de Pasqual, who has been widely active in recent years as a continuo player in the French early music scene, presents here a selection of French harpsichord music centered on works from the era of Louis XIII—a “trusted virtuoso” who was also a patron of musical culture. In addition to arrangements of vocal music, he skillfully adapts lute and organ pieces, allowing listeners to closely examine the unique French refinement that differs somewhat in character from the early Italian Baroque or late English Renaissance of the same period. The ensemble music for court dances performed during the reign of Louis XIII—to which the king himself is said to have contributed some compositions—has been arranged by the performer, De Pascual, in the style of the era, based on transcriptions from later generations. From arrangements of songs by 16th-century composers such as Le Jeune and Boissé to solo pieces by Chambonnières and Louis Couperin, please enjoy this “prehistory” of the well-known harpsichord school through exquisite performances on Italian and Flemish harpsichords—instruments that were highly prized during this era, before the development of French-style harpsichords.
