The Concerto Sirocco, formed in 2009 by wind players who honed their skills at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, a major center for the study of ancient music, reveals the true face of an early Baroque composer whose name was widely known only for one piece, but whose full profile was unknown. The new album reveals the true face of this early Baroque genius, whose name has been widely known but whose full profile has remained elusive. The only Italian composer to appear in the "Fitzwilliam's Virginal Book," a particularly famous collection of keyboard music from the English Renaissance, Giovanni Picchi was known only for one unique toccata included in the book, but his life was marked by the variety of sounds he created, Picchi, who was born around 1572 and was active mainly in Venice at about the same time as Monteverdi, published a collection of canzonos in 1625, the same year that "The Battle of Tancredi and Clorinda" and Castello's sonatas were released in the water city. In 1625, Picchi published a collection of canzons.The various instruments, including violin, recorder, woodwind cornet, and sackbutton (trombone), compete in their tonal beauty and technique, and the performance ranges from exciting dialogic music in the best of concerto style to relatively large-format works reminiscent of Gabrieli's double chorus form. The performances are exquisite, with a level of sophistication that only the most gifted players in the field could attain. The use of the Sackbutt's part in the Violone, based on the results of his research, is also an interesting touch. The back inlay of this CD incorrectly states the year of Picchi's birth, but it is provided as is. Please note that the year of Picchi's death is incorrectly listed on the back inlay of this CD.
