Respighi’s Masterpiece Opera, Released on Video for the First Time! Enrico is a bellmaker. He is devastated when a satyr causes the bell he made for a new church to fall to the bottom of a valley. Witnessing this, the fairy Lauten deline casts a spell to lift his spirits once he returns home, then persuades Enrico to abandon his family and come to the mountains to make bells for her. “I will not return home until the bell that sank to the bottom of the lake rings,” Enrico declares. His wife, Magda, driven to despair by the loss of Enrico, throws herself into the lake and takes her own life. Just as his children arrive bearing the news, the sound of the bell—which was supposed to have sunk—echoes through the air… The opera *The Sunken Bell* is a masterpiece by Respighi, known for his “Roman Trilogy.” Based on Gerhard Hauptmann’s allegorical play, this work showcases the essence of Respighi’s music—mysterious, elegant, and brimming with splendor and richness. Although it premiered in Hamburg on November 18, 1927, Ricordi, the publisher of Respighi’s works, was dissatisfied with the subject matter and refused to publish it; ultimately, the score was published by the major German publisher “Bote & Bock.” It was staged at La Scala the following year, in 1928, and subsequently at the Metropolitan Opera, where it was a huge success; however, opportunities for subsequent performances were scarce. This time, it was revived at the Cagliari Opera House in Sardinia—known for its innovative and ambitious productions—and generated significant buzz. Against a mysterious and colorful backdrop, talented young singers such as Valentina Farkas, Maria Luigia Borsi, and Angelo Villari delivered outstanding performances, while Donato Renzetti’s seasoned conducting brought this opera together with great artistry.
