Description:

You won’t be able to watch this without shedding a tear! A Moving Memorial Concert for Abbado, Presented by Nelsons and Faust Conductor Claudio Abbado passed away on January 20, 2014, at the age of 80. He had been scheduled to visit Japan in the fall of 2013 for the first time in seven years, but this tragedy occurred shortly after his concert was canceled due to health reasons. This video captures the memorial concert for Abbado held in April 2014. The program was designed to pay tribute to Abbado’s music. The disc opens with the second movement, “Funeral March,” from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica,” which Abado performed at the 2013 opening concert of what would be his final Lucerne Festival. Listening to this performance, it is hard to believe that he would pass away just six months later. A recording of this concert has already been released by ACCENTUSMUSIC (ACC10282BD/ACC20282DVD). The memorial concert begins with the first movement of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony. This piece was performed by the orchestra alone, without a conductor. As the empty conductor’s podium is shown, one cannot help but be struck by the immense presence Abado commanded. This is followed by a recitation of Hölderlin’s “Bread and Wine” by Bruno Ganz, a renowned Swiss actor who was a close friend of Abado’s. This speaks to the breadth of Abado’s artistic friendships. One of the highlights of this video is Isabelle Faust’s performance of Berg’s Violin Concerto. Faust recorded this work with Abbado in 2010 (HMC.902105); that performance was highly acclaimed, and she is now active worldwide as one of the leading violinists of our time. Faust’s performance, as if reflecting on her collaboration with Abbado, creates music that deeply moves the listener. And finally, the sixth movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. It is a performance in which everyone on stage—including Nelsons—is overcome with grief, and their feelings for Abbado overflow. Seeing the orchestra members embrace one another—as if to affirm their mission to carry Abado’s musical spirit into the future—is a deeply moving sight. The photograph used on the album cover is a work by Berlin-based photographer Adrian Sauer, taken on January 20, 2014. King International
