The Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" and the Symphony No. 8 "Symphony of a Thousand" were filmed at the International Mahler Festival held on home ground in Leipzig in May 2011 to mark the centenary of the composer's death. - Chailly returns to Mahler for the first time since his Concertgebouw cycle In the cycle Chailly completed as chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, No. 2 was taped in November 2001 and No. 8 in January 2000, so these are re-recordings made ten and eleven years later respectively. With the Leipzig orchestra he has also released the Schumann symphonies in Mahler's re-orchestrations, and expectations are high for a partnership in such good form in its sixth year. - Mahler recordings by the Gewandhaus Orchestra For all its distinguished history, which reaches back to the middle of the eighteenth century and takes in a great many premieres, the orchestra has surprisingly few Mahler recordings to its name. No. 1: Markevitch (live, March 1982) No. 5: Neumann (studio, January 1966) No. 6: Neumann (studio, January 1966) No. 7: Neumann (studio, May 1968); Masur (studio, September 1982) No. 9: Neumann (studio, November 1967) No. 10, Adagio: Sebastian (studio, 1963) Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen: Lorenz (baritone), Masur (studio, January 1979) Kindertotenlieder: Lorenz (baritone), Masur (studio, January 1979) Both the Second and the Eighth are new to the orchestra's official commercial discography. In the Eighth in particular, the visual dimension - simply seeing forces on this scale assembled - matters a great deal, which makes the release on film valuable in itself. - On the cover artwork The covers use oil paintings by the contemporary German artist Neo Rauch (b. 1960). Through a collaboration between the Leipzig label Accentus Music and Rauch, a native of the city, the canvas Chor was painted specially for the Eighth Symphony after the artist attended rehearsals in May 2011.
