Influenced by Japanese Spiritual Culture: Piano Works by Cowell and Cage Henry Cowell (1897–1965), known as the inventor of the “tone cluster”—a technique in which a group of notes at a specific pitch is played simultaneously using the palms or elbows— and John Cage (1912–1992), known as the inventor of the “prepared piano”—a technique that involves inserting bolts or paper between the piano strings to produce percussion-like tones—are two of the 20th century’s greatest American musical geniuses, and this is a superb compilation of their piano works. Of course, the album is packed with tone clusters and prepared piano, allowing listeners to once again appreciate the fascinating effects and expressive power of these techniques; moreover, both composers were influenced by Japanese spiritual culture, and there is something in their music that strikes a chord with Japanese audiences. While Cage’s works are primarily composed for Merce Cunningham’s dances, one is drawn to the wordplay-inspired titles taken from Joyce’s *Finnegans Wake*, such as “Toast as It Is Unto the End” and “In the Name of the Holocaust.” While Cowell’s works have been preserved in the composer’s own performances, Leebner—a specialist in contemporary music—renders them with even greater precision. Pieces like “Snow on Mount Fuji,” where pentatonic tone clusters evoke a mysterious Far Eastern atmosphere, allow us to rediscover the beauty of these compositions. King International
