Julian Martino, a world-renowned mandolin virtuoso, is constantly exploring new possibilities for this instrument. While numerous great composers, such as Vivaldi, have written works for the mandolin, Martino hopes that pieces composed in our own time will become true classics—much like Rodrigo’s *Concierto de Aranjuez* in the world of the guitar—and that both the instrument and its repertoire will continue to evolve. His latest album features concertos by Corentin Appalais and Karol Beffa. While both demand a high level of technical skill from both the soloists and the orchestra, they are characterized by captivating and memorable melodies that make you want to listen to them again and again. Vivaldi’s *Concerto for Several Instruments* RV558 is originally a concerto for multiple instruments, including two mandolins; however, the version performed here is an arrangement by Corentin Appalais for solo mandolin and orchestra. Corentin Apalais was born in Toulouse in 1995. He initially studied the viola, and his first composition was a piece for that instrument. He founded the Alod String Quartet and won first prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, but later left the quartet to devote himself entirely to composition. Since winning a composition competition in 2019, he has been creating works for concert programs as well as music for films and electronic music. Karol Beffa was born in 1973. He worked as a child actor during his early years and has appeared in films. He studied composition at the École Normale and earned his doctorate in 2003 with a dissertation on Ligeti’s piano études. Her works span a wide range of genres, including chamber music, concertos, operas, and film scores. She also served as composer-in-residence for the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (2006–2009). MIRARE
