The best of French clavesan music, and the Balbatl prodigy Rousset approaches its charms! Christophe Rousset, a leading figure in the world of French and European classical music in both keyboard performance and conducting, has recorded the works of Barbator, who was active in France in the second half of the 18th century. Included is a collaboration with violinist Girone Gaubert-Jacques, who also plays in Gaillard's ensemble Pulcinella. Born in Dijon in 1724, Balbatl first learned the organ from his father, and after his father's death, he became a church organist while studying organ and harpsichord with his brother Jean-Philippe Rameau, He also served as organist at the churches of Saint-Roch and Notre-Dame (sharing the organ with Dakan and others).Charles Burney was very successful at the time, and when he was invited to Barbato's home after one of his performances at St. Roch Church, he was told that his home was always crowded with about 30 ladies and gentlemen, and that he had an organ with pedals and a Lucquhars harpsichord, indicating that Barbato was a very successful musician and financially successful. The house always had a pedal organ and a harpsichord by Lückers, indicating Bartol's success as a musician as well as his financial success. Rousset states that French harpsichord music can be divided into three periods. The first period is Louis Couperin and Danglebert. The second period is François Coupland and Rameau. The third period, after 1730, is represented by Dufry, Royer, and Barbatol.The first period was influenced by Louis XIV, with many elegant works modeled after court dances; the second period was more intimate, with a slight influence of the Italian style; and the third period, with works by Handel, D. Scarlatti, and others published in Paris, was more technique-oriented and at the same time, more pastoral, like the paintings of François Boucher. The third period was also marked by the publication in Paris of works by Handel, D. Scarlatti, and others. The first volume of Barbatre's clavecin was published in Paris in 1759. The technique requires crossing of the hands, and there is also an alberti bass accompaniment reminiscent of the classical style. The second collection was never published. The work with violin, which is included as a coupling piece with the clavecin solo, is in three movements, with the violin playing the role of soloist in the second movement.Throughout, the work has the grandeur and orchestral opulence of a French overture and the subtle expression and concentration required of a solo piece, making it the quintessential Rousset work.
