Description:

Recorded in 1962 and released the following year on the Mercury label, this album is regarded as one of the most ambitious works led by trumpeter and flugelhornist Art Farmer. On this album, Farmer leads a large ensemble arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson, with Nelson’s arrangements creating a work that masterfully blends sophistication and swing. The lineup brings together figures from New York’s hard bop scene alongside top-tier studio and jazz musicians; against the backdrop of a full ensemble of brass, woodwinds, and rhythm section led by Nelson, Farmer stands out as the leading solo voice. Guitarists Jim Hall and Barry Galbraith, bassist George Duvivier, drummer Charlie Pership, and pianist Tommy Flanagan are among the players supporting Farmer. They perform alongside an expanded orchestral lineup consisting of trumpets, trombones, French horns, woodwinds, and percussion. Nelson’s orchestration allows space for Farmer’s lyricism and mellow tone to shine, skillfully balancing meticulously crafted ensemble passages with brilliant solo performances. The program features beloved standards such as “Street of Dreams” and “Naima,” and the orchestral arrangement highlights why Farmer was considered one of the most elegant and expressive horn players of his era.
