Transcending the boundaries between classical and jazz. Luc Duval’s vision of a new Gershwin. *Gershwin Variations* is an ambitious tribute album to George Gershwin by Luc Duval. This album serves as an ode to Gershwin, a composer who stands at the intersection of classical and jazz and defies categorization. Inspired by Gershwin’s unique individuality, Dubourg has created works that, like Gershwin’s, cannot be confined to existing genres. An internationally acclaimed pianist, Dubourg has previously recorded works such as Scarlatti’s sonatas and Fauré’s complete piano works; with this album, however, he has embarked on an unprecedented and ambitious endeavor to explore a musical world entirely distinct from those previous recordings. This album is divided into two parts: Part 1 features Gershwin’s masterpieces, while Part 2 contains Duval’s own original compositions, inspired by Gershwin’s music. Both Part 1 and Part 2 are characterized by grand scale and virtuosic technique, yet each possesses a distinct personality of its own. Part 1 was recorded at the Philharmonie de Paris using a special piano, the “SP/287,” crafted by Stephen Paulello. The album features Gershwin’s masterpieces, including the “Piano Concerto in F” performed with the Orchestre de Paris, as well as “Three Preludes” and a unique interpretation of “Rhapsody in Blue” that incorporates a cadenza composed by Dubourg himself. Part 2 was recorded at Paulello Studio and consists of 12 virtuosic etudes spanning all 12 keys, composed by Duval based on Gershwin’s iconic works. This collection of etudes is the most ambitious work of DuBourg’s career as a pianist, demonstrating his free-spirited approach and deep curiosity for creativity. Through bold and poetic reinterpretations that make full use of counterpoint, ever-changing harmonies, and original rhythms, it brings out the rich charm hidden within Gershwin’s melodies. This collection can be said to follow in the tradition of the great composers who came before him and composed their own etudes. Duvalg says of this album: “I wanted to create an album that captures the spirit of ‘constant transformation’ that breathes life into music in general, and into Gershwin’s music in particular. This album incorporates numerous elements, including improvisational playing, unique interpretations not found in the original scores, and my own original compositions based on Gershwin’s works. For these reasons, and out of respect for Gershwin, I decided to title this album *Gershwin Variations*.” Sony Music
