Leonard Bernstein's first complete Mahler symphony cycle is one of the milestones in the history of Mahler performance in the 20th century.In 1960, the first recording was made on the occasion of the Mahler Festival held in New York to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahler's birth, and it took eight years until 1967. No. 7 "Night Song" and No. 9 (1965), No. 1 "Giant" (1966), and No. 6 "Tragic" (1967), in that order, while "No. 8" was recorded in 1966 during a guest appearance by the London Symphony Orchestra. After Bernstein retired as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1969, "Song of the Earth" (1972, Israel Philharmonic) and "No. 10 - Adagio" (1975) were recorded in the 1970s, completing a more complete recording of the complete symphonies.
