This disc demonstrates the high level of recording technology of Reference Recordings. A collection of chamber works by contemporary American composers with a realistic sound image that skillfully captures a sense of perspective. This is a wonderful recording that reminds us once again of the capabilities of the excellent recording label, Reference Recordings. The transparent hall tones are rich and beautifully resonant, the instruments are in natural harmony, and the actual perspective and spatial expansiveness are captured beautifully. Hats off to Keith O. Johnson's ability to vividly record and beautifully reproduce unfamiliar contemporary works. Chris Brubeck is a classical and jazz composer from Los Angeles, the son of renowned jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. He plays bass, trombone, piano, and guitar himself, and his musical style spans jazz, blues, pop, and classical, and has been described by the Chicago Tribune as "a 21st century Bernstein of lyrical melody.Boston-based composer Michael Gandolfi has also worked on film and theater music, influenced by jazz, blues, and rock styles. His "Vientos y Tangos," a passionate tango motif, has become a staple of the brass band repertoire. Pianist and composer Lukas Foss was born in Berlin and immigrated to the United States after escaping the ravages of the Nazi war. He is one of the major contributors to the promotion of contemporary music in the United States. The Concord Chamber Music Society was founded in January 2000 by Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Wendy Putnam. The Society presents chamber music concerts throughout the year in Concord, Massachusetts, and contributes to the development of the younger generation through outreach activities by members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other leading musicians.
