Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

Jarrett's classical performances that emphasize transparency to bring the listener closer to the composer Keith Jarrett's Bach recordings began with the February 1987 recording of the Mean Clavier Works. This album was recorded live in March of the same year, one month after the first studio recording, at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in New York City, known for its excellent acoustics. The studio performance of the first recording of the "Mean Clavier Pieces" was described by Gramophone magazine as "These performances are completely conquered in tempo, phrasing, articulation, and the use of ornaments. Both instrument and performer become discreet mediums from which the music emerges without exaggeration. Keith Jarrett's goal was for the performers to be transparent in order to bring the listener closer to the composer. He said at the time: "When I play Bach, I want to be able to hear the composer. "When I play Bach, the performance marks on the staff, the movements of the notes, are so inherently richly expressive that I can hear the thought process through them. Any coloring is unnecessary for this process." Keith Jarrett says that Bach is the composer who has influenced him the most.Keith would go on to record the Second Book of Averages and French Suites on harpsichord, as well as Handel, Mozart, and Shostakovich on piano, and this live recording can be said to be the beginning of his career.
