Viliem Vrček, a leading figure in contemporary Czech cello music, records Martinů's complete works for cello and piano! Supraphon label dedicates its efforts to new recordings of works by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959). This album features works for cello and piano, performed by the Czech virtuoso Viliem Vrček. Vlček is a highly acclaimed performer who has won top prizes at every competition he has entered, including the Penderecki International Cello Competition in Krakow and the International Instrumental Competition in Markuskirchen. He has already performed with ensembles such as the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. He delighted Japanese audiences with a superb performance during his Japan tour for the Young Prague in Tokyo Concert 2019. The pianist is Belarusian Denis Linnik. Linnik is a highly regarded pianist who also made headlines as a semi-finalist in the recently held Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition 2025. Composer Martinů wrote more works for the cello than any other composer of his generation, composing both chamber music and concertos. This recording of his complete works for cello and piano was made at the Basel Conservatory, just a few kilometers from Schönenberg, where Martinů spent his later years. Most of these works were written for renowned cellists who were Martinů's friends, such as Franck, Fournier, Honegger, and Piatigorsky. The Variations on Slovak Folk Songs is Martinů's final chamber work. In this piece, one can hear his longing for his homeland, to which he could never return. Vlček and Linnik deliver a performance that captures the very essence of Martinů. SUPRAPHON
